Patricia B. McConnell, PhD, CAAB is an Adjunct Professor, teaching “The Biology and Philosophy of Human-Animal Relationships,” (Zoology 335). The curriculum includes topics related to evolution, domestication, comparative cognition, ethology, ecology, and the physiology of stress, as well as historical and current philosophical thought regarding our duties toward animals. It is designed to provide students with the information and critical skills necessary to evaluate current environmental, social and personal issues related to human-animal relationships from both biological and philosophical perspectives. McConnell also serves as a member of the Forum on Animal Research Ethics Committee, charged by the Chancellor to facilitate community-wide discussions on the use of animals in biomedical research. McConnell is a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist, whose primary work currently is publishing works on animal behavior, and speaking around the world to academic groups, veterinarians, training groups, and libraries about applied ethology and how it relates to companion animal behavior and welfare. She consults with clients on a limited basis, and advises writers and producers on programs related to companion animal behavior. She is active in the Interdisciplinary Forum on Applied Animal Behavior, and meets and consults about issues of national import to Certified Behaviorists and Board Certified Veterinary Behaviorists. McConnell is increasingly active in efforts to humanely and effectively use animals as assistants in therapy for patients with both physical and psychiatric challenges, by creating a seminar and DVD on the effective use of dogs as therapists, acting as a reviewer for NIH and speaking at Denver University at the Graduate School of Social Work.

Patricia has published 14 books on companion animal behavior, many of which are read around the world. Her first major book, The Other End of the Leash, has now been published in fourteen other languages. Her latest book, Love Has No Age Limit, encourages successful adoptions of homeless dogs from shelters and rescue groups. To date, almost 30,00 copies have been given to new dogs owners, and a substantial portion of the income is donated to shelters and rescue groups. In fall of 2012, Patricia initiated a series of successful fundraisers for animal shelters in the midwest and Texas. McConnell regularly appears on radio shows, including The Diane Rehm Show in Washington, D.C and the Larry Meiller Show from Wisconsin Public Radio. She continues to speak around the country and the world about canine (and Homo sapien) behavior, giving approximately 15 invited talks and seminars each year.
